Analysis of the Palestinian-Israeli West Bank Deal
Analysis of the Palestinian-Israeli West Bank Deal
Basically this is how it is going to break down:
Israel wants about 7.3% of some land from West Bank around some of the big cities and settlements in order to make sure those towns and cities are now broken up by international border lines.
In return, the Palestinians will keep the 92.7% of West Bank and be allowed to get another 5.4% land added to West Bank into the direction of Negev Desert.
So Palestine will then control 98.1% of the current West Bank area and Israel would take 1.9% of the land to preserve some of the big cities.
So what is the problem now?
Well Palestine wants to push Israeli generosity. They want Israel to retreat to the land controlled by Israel before the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. Meaning, Israel must give East Jerusalem and the 24 settlements to Palestine.
This is clearly now going to happen because Jerusalem is of great importance in Judaism and to the Israeli people. And they see 1967 War as unjustified Arab aggression (which in some ways it was) and by getting East Jerusalem during the war, they see that God has handed them victory.
Meanwhile, Hamas fighters broke a ceasefire that was in effect by firing rockets at Israel (once again... here we go) so Israel closed all border crossings into Gaza strip.
If Palestine is keen to establish its nationhood, then i think it should seriously consider taking this offer from the Israeli government. This offer may never be made again if Palestinian authority refuses.
So far Palestinian government said the deal is unacceptable while Israel is remaining quiet - giving time for the high government officials to make up its mind. Since the Israeli prime minister is resigning, one can only speculate who the new government leadership is and how they will react to the peace process and especially this deal.
